ATHENA APPLICATION STATEMENT


Athena Progressive Giving Circle will award up to $27,000 to projects that either 1) supports aiding young adult women with special needs, with an emphasis on helping individuals successfully transition to independent living, or 2) addresses the critical social, interpersonal, hygienic, mental health, and life skill needs of homeless women and girls. For the latter project, any organization applying should focus on assuring that homeless women/girls gain self-sufficiency and end their cycle of homelessness.


BACKGROUND


1) The Athena Giving Circle is accepting proposals from 501(c)3 organizations serving Sarasota and/or Manatee counties that aid young adult women with special needs. The focus of the project is to help individuals successfully transition to independent living.
 Athena will consider projects or initiatives which create a means to independent living using assessments such as: individual strengths, interests, skills, academic abilities, social capabilities etc. and then use the assessments to assure movement to independent living. Proposals must specify the resources the agency will provide to the young female adults either directly or by collaborating with other entities.
2) The Athena Giving Circle is accepting proposals from 501(c)3 organizations serving Sarasota and/or Manatee counties that aid in the effort to assure self-sufficiency and end homelessness for women and girls. Proposals must specify the resources the agency will provide to the women/girls either directly or by collaborating with other entities.


Please note that Athena’s focus is women and girls.


The Athena Application form is part of this proposal statement. The application form includes an understanding of the Athena Progressive Giving Circle and outlines the information expected from the applicant regarding services, finances, measurement tools and outcomes. 
All those receiving funding must submit semi-annual presentations to the Athena Progressive Giving Circle including a written report which documents the efforts and outcomes. Athena will provide the questions to be answered.


Proposals must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on September 15th, 2023.


ATHENA GRANTEE GUIDELINES
 
 
GRANTEE ORGANIZATION CANDIDATES MUST: 
  • Show an innovative, holistic, effective and direct approach to supporting women, girls. 
  • Show a clear need for the funds and a plan for their use. 
  • Demonstrate a deep commitment to their work. 

ATHENA WILL NOT PROVIDE GRANTS TO THE FOLLOWING: 
  1. Organizations that discriminate against people because of age, race, creed, handicap, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, or national origin. 
  2. Religious or sectarian organizations, unless engaged in a significant project benefiting the entire community. 
  3. Athletes, teams, sporting events or tournaments of any kind (amateur, professional) including charity golf or tennis tournaments. 
  4. Non-academic educational activities such as bands, choirs, proms, after proms, graduations, etc. 
  5. Fundraising events such as telethons or walk-a-thons. 
  6. Fashion shows beauty pageants or contestants. 
  7. Individuals, for any purpose (e.g. scholarships, hardship assistance, field trips). 
  8. Requests to support travel for groups or individuals when that is the primary reason for the proposals. 
  9. Political candidates or organizations. 
  10. Organizations in which Athena members are staff, volunteers, or hold Board positions.
